Self Portrait (2018)

Furniture making is a passion of mine. My work grows out of a study of historical furniture and the craft traditions that surround them, with a focus on making practical objects—mostly chairs, tables, and boxes.

My style is rooted in 18th and 19th century designs, but as a jumping-off point for further exploration rather than an end point. I particularly enjoy integrating marquetry into furniture in a way that interacts with other elements of the design and have been on a Silas Kopf-inspired trompe d'oiel kick recently.

Like many woodworkers, I have become something of a tool collector. I prefer the quiet and focus of hand tools when possible, so my weakness is antique handplanes. I'm quick to note that they are all sharpened and I use them all, sometimes. But it is hard to defend having four jack planes... My fascination with these tools has led me to start making some myself. It is too early to call that anything but an experiment, but I'm enjoying the learning curve.

This site documents a range of recent work, including finished pieces, experiments in progress, and various tangents and side-projects.
